As I mentioned yesterday this week is the official kickoff week for college football. It starts tomorrow! And what better place to watch the big games than in the ultimate man cave?! Every man wants their dream man cave, including my husband. He often talks about the day we remodel the other half of our house and what he’s going to do in ‘his space’. Which means, how I’m going to design his dream space.
What makes the ultimate man cave? There are few design factors to consider to consider when designing this man’s dream space.
- How the space is used: TV watching, game playing (video, poker, pool, etc), etc.
- Audio/Visual: TV, in-wall speakers
- Seating: Designated seating area, game table & seating, bar seating
- Lighting: task, ambience
- Flooring: Wood, carpet, stone
- Bar: What appliances & plumbing is needed?
Once you have gone over how the space is being used and what is needed, then the actual design can come to fruition. When it comes the audio/visual, there are a few things that need to be considered. Noise is a huge factor for those favorite men in our lives. They tend to like their TV’s turned up loud, as well as their loud voices carrying from all the hooping and hollering. I suggest selecting materials that are noise preventing–i.e. acoustic sheetrock for walls and ceiling, acoustic barriers to go under wood floors, cover walls with acoustic fabric or a wall covering. Of course the more fabrics and textiles you use will also aid in noise cancellation.
When designing your man’s dream getaway space, you need to consider his style. This is his space, and if you are like me, this is the only space he will really get any say (insert smile & a wink). Essentially this is his grown up playroom. Now let’s take a look at some of the man caves any man would crush over.
Below is a game room I helped design while working in Houston, Texas, for designer Jane Page Design Group.
